Benefits of fire rated aluminium cladding
Fire rated aluminium cladding panels are composite materials that consist of two aluminium cover sheets and a non-combustible core. The panels are designed to offer a high level of fire resistance, with a fire rating of A2-s1-d0 in the UK.
This means that they are non-combustible and do not contribute to the spread of fire, making them a safe choice for building construction.
Fire safety and building regulations
In December 2018 a ban was introduced on combustible materials on buildings of 18 metres high and above. Specifically this related to buildings with one or more dwellings.
Four years later in December 2022, these regulations were extended to include a ban on combustible materials being used on new hotels, hostels and boarding houses in England that are over 11 metres high.
Choosing the right fire rated cladding for your project
If your building is 11 metres high or above and contains one or more dwelling, the fire rated cladding for your project must meet EN 13501-1 Class A standards and carry a fire rating of A2-s1-d0.
The ‘A2’ part refers to the fire behaviour and how much a material contributes to the behaviour of fire. An A2 classification is non-combustible (Scotland) and limited combustibility (England and Wales), whereas an F which is at the other end of the scale means it is easily flammable.
The ‘s1’ part refers to smoke development and to the total smoke emitted during the first 10 minutes of exposure to fire. S1 is the best rating and refers to little or no smoke being emitted.
The ‘d0’ part refers to the number of flaming droplets and particles that are produced within the first 10 minutes of fire exposure. D0 refers to no droplets being produced.
Knotwood are manufacturers of fire rated aluminium cladding
As manufacturers of fire rated aluminium cladding, Knotwood apply wood grain finishes to transform the aluminium into a timber aesthetic while retaining the fire safety of aluminium.
Knotwood is the perfect solution for interior designers, architects, main contractors and property developers when specifying cladding for buildings.
Why specify our fire rated aluminium cladding for your project?
Not only does our range of aluminium cladding boast incredible strength, versatility and durability, it also benefits your project as it carries the appearance of timber with a wood grain effect.
The powder coated wood grain effect of Knotwood’s fire rated aluminium cladding offers all the aesthetic advantages of timber with the practicality and durability of aluminium.
Indeed, many professionals assume the wood grain patterns are a sticker, veneer, or a wrap. They are impressed to realise the wood grain designs are powder coated for extra durability and longevity.
Importantly, to reiterate not only will your building’s aesthetics benefit from stunning timber-like cladding, our aluminium cladding is non-combustible. All our cladding systems are EN 13501-1 Class A approved as well as fire rated to A2-s1-d0.
